"Friends don't let friends corset alone."
Rating: 3/5 ★★★ What a disappointment. When I started reading My lady Jane last year, I had zero expectations. I quickly fell in love with Jane and its companions, the writing style and hilarious one liners and scenes. I expected something similar from My plain Jane and I'm sure I'm not the only one who found herself disappointed because of it. In My plain Jane we have three points of view - Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë (yes, you've read that right, she's Jane's best friend) and Alexander (an original character). These povs are one of the main problems I've had with the book. Not because they're bad or anything, but simply because Charlotte and Alexander's storylines were very connected and they interacted with each other for most of the book. That leaves only one chapter out of three to follow Jane, who's supposed to be the protagonist even tho she reads like a secondary one. What's the point of writing a trilogy on three different Janes if you write them as secondary characters???
!!! SPOILER ALERT !!! Another thing that I could't stand: So, this is a Jane Eyre retelling. Ok. Everyone and their sister knows that Jane's story wouldn't be complete without Mr. Rochester. And he is in the book. Except, HE ISN'T JANE'S ENDGAME. LIKE WAT. I know that when writing retellings you don't have to follow every single detail of the plot, but you do have to respect the major ones such as the character's endgame. !!! END OF SPOILER !!! More in general, My plain Jane is way less funny than My lady Jane and its characters and plot aren't as compelling but I did give it 3 stars instead of 1 or 2. That's because there are some good jokes, I liked some retelling aspects of the story (like the ghosts and Helen) and I cared about Jane. But that's it.
